Cocktail Glasses (The Stemmed Collection)

Cocktail Glasses are the theater of the bar. Unlike wine glasses which are designed to trap aroma, cocktail glassware is designed to showcase the visual appeal of the drink, control the temperature, and direct the liquid to specific parts of the palate.

The golden rule of mixology: Stemmed glasses are for drinks served “up” (chilled with ice but strained into the glass without ice). The stem ensures your hand doesn't warm the drink.

1. The Martini Glass (The V-Shape)

The classic symbol of the cocktail world.

  • Design: A cone-shaped bowl on a long stem.
  • Pros: The wide surface area allows the spirit's aroma (like Gin) to open up instantly.
  • Cons: Historically unstable and notorious for spilling. The steep walls make it difficult to carry without sloshing.
  • Best For: The classic Martini, Cosmopolitan.

2. The Coupe (The Vintage Revival)

Originally designed for Champagne in 17th-century England, the Coupe has overtaken the Martini glass as the modern bartender's favorite.

  • Design: A shallow, broad, saucer-shaped bowl.
  • Function: It holds the same volume as a Martini glass (approx. 5-7 oz) but the curved lip keeps the liquid safer inside, reducing spills. It is perfect for floating garnishes (like a dried lime wheel or flower petal).
  • Best For: Daiquiri, Sidecar, Aviation, and Champagne (vintage style).

3. The Nick & Nora (The Professional's Choice)

Named after the fictional detectives in the 1934 film *The Thin Man*, this glass sits between a Coupe and a wine glass.

  • Design: A deep, bell-shaped bowl with straight sides, usually smaller (4-6 oz).
  • Why Pros Love It: It forces the drinker to tilt their head back slightly, delivering the drink to the mid-palate rather than the tip of the tongue. It is elegant, spill-proof, and keeps small, potent drinks perfectly chilled.
  • Best For: Manhattans, stirred spirit-forward drinks.

4. Glencairn (The Whisky Specialist)

While technically a tasting glass, the Glencairn is essential for any bar.

  • Design: A wide crystal bowl that tapers significantly at the rim, sitting on a short, solid stump.
  • Function: The shape concentrates the alcohol vapors, allowing the nose to detect subtle notes (vanilla, peat, fruit) without the “burn” of ethanol.
  • Best For: Single Malt Scotch, premium Bourbon.
